Golf Fore Red Saturday!

This is a great and fun golf event put on by Golf Fore Red, and my friend Mary Robinson! Unfortunately, a shoulder injury will keep me from the course this year, but please give them your support, and I hope to be back out there next year! (photo is my team last year!)

BELLEVUE, Wash. (July 18, 2011) – The Golf Club at Redmond Ridge will be awash in red on Saturday, July 23, when 144 women golfers – most of them outfitted in red — will tee off at the fourth annual Golf Fore Red™ benefit tournament. More than 100 sponsors and donors are supporting the sold-out event.
Since its founding in 2008 by two women who lost their mothers to heart disease, the annual Golf Fore Red event has focused on raising awareness of heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women, while raising funds for cardiovascular research.
Although the event is sold out, women of all golfing abilities who are interested in golfing in the scramble format tournament can add their names to a waiting list by sending an email request to GolfForeRed@yahoo.com.
Golfers will be treated to a goody bag stuffed with merchandise, gift cards, nutritious treats, useful information and discount coupons. They’ll also receive “Women Take Heart™” information and educational materials from The Hope Heart Institute.
Throughout the day, women will compete for prizes for 1st and 2nd place teams, and KP (closest to the pin) tee shots on selected par 3 holes. Participants may also bid on silent auction items and buy tickets for chances to win more than 30 prize packages. Among auction items are hotel packages, rounds of golf at private country clubs, and designer apparel. The competitions include a cork-chipping contest featuring a wine-themed prize basket valued at more than $500. The drawings feature an array of prizes ranging from wine to golf lessons and golf bags and accessories.
Prior to the shotgun start at 8 a.m. the women will gather at the 9th green for a rules review and a putting contest when all 144 participants will putt simultaneously.
Tournament co-founder Mary Robinson of Bellevue credits a dedicated team of 14 volunteers with this year’s best-ever response. “Without these amazing women, we would not have sold out weeks before the event, nor had such a high level of support from hole sponsors and donors,” she remarked.
Golf Fore Red was co-created by Robinson, a past president of Northwest Ladies Golf Association, and her lifelong friend, Shelley French, a past president of the Seattle Chapter of EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association). The duo conceived the event as both a tribute to their mothers and as a way to bring women from their respective golf groups together to rally around a mutual health concern.
Since inception, the now-trademarked event has netted several thousand dollars for heart research. Proceeds go to the local affiliate of the American Heart Association. Last week, the committee received final IRS approval on its 501(c)3 application as a tax-exempt charitable organization.
